This very energy-consuming dust collector model is mostly used in very large plants. Even today, they are found near some dams or power plants.
If tact, these are chambers where the dust-laden airstream is subjected to ion emissions which build up the static charge of the suspended particles. The dust becomes electrically charged, and attach to surfaces that are polarized differently. They are periodically dislodged from these surfaces through vibration or washing, then fall under gravity toward the receiving hopper.
This model of dust collector is still being used today in some open pit mines and aluminum plants.
